Using Social Media in Ministry
Chris Brogan and Jon Swanson hit the nail on the head with this post. (You can find Jon’s blog, Levite Chronicles, here.) People are longing for engagement and connection, both in the church and outside of it. The tools are merely a way to help people make those connections, with one another, and with Christ.
Some will always be slow to adapt to the tools and that’s OK. We shouldn’t leave those people behind. But neither should we ignore folks who are already making significant changes in the ways they interact with others. The church (as well as other non-profit organizations and corporations) are struggling with this issue. Blessed are the churches whose leaders understand how to bridge the gap.
A good resource for further understanding some of the issues facing the church today can be found in M. Rex Miller’s book, The Millennium Matrix: Reclaiming the Past, Reframing the Future of the Church.
What about you? How is your church using social media? What’s working? What objections have you found? Have they been overcome and if so, how?
