Call Me an iPhone User
After months of deliberation, analyzing current usage and comparing plans and phones – I did it. I took the plunge and bought an iPhone! Why and now what?
The Case
I’ve had a basic, durable, reliable cell phone from my previous carrier, Alltel, for several years. It suited me just fine. That is, until I started my own business and needed access to contacts, calendar and data. It was time to upgrade to a new smart phone. But which one? A Blackberry something-or-other or an iPhone (or some other brand altogether)?
Alltel Failed
I’m not Ralph Nader and this isn’t Consumer Reports. I’m not a techie. The differences had much less to do with the gadget and more to do with my experience and expectations. Here’s where Alltel had a chance but blew it. I’ve been a “valued” customer for a long time. I’ve never upgraded my phone and I was spending way more than I needed to each month for a plan I seldom reviewed. Yet, as a long-time customer, I got the same deal as a new person walking in off the street. Woo-hoo! (Reminds me of the older son in the story of the prodigal son, but Alltel is not God. I digress.)
I would have been fine with a Blackberry curve or storm or bold or whatever. I wouldn’t have had to go through tons of paperwork or transport contacts. I just wanted Alltel to show me some love. When they didn’t, I decided to look elsewhere.
Tribes Tip Scales
I’m a MacBook user. I LOVE my Mac. Prior to this Spring, I was a PC. I never said, “I love my PC.” My friend Matt loves his iPhone. So does Jimmy Carter, my now go-to-guy for all things Apple. Dozens of other people say they LOVE their iPhones. These people are Apple’s best marketers – Brand Ambassadors whose enthusiasm is contagious. The price wasn’t that much different. The plans were about the same. The Tribe sold me. Seth is right.
Now what?
If you’re an iPhone user, what business applications would you recommend? Why do you love your iPhone? And if you’re not, what smart phone do you have and do you love it? And beyond that, what opportunities do you have to create brand ambassadors for your personal brand or your business?

My prior devices, I used/tolerated. My iPhone, I love. Mainly, because the interface is so sweet. I’m still surprised, months later, at some of the new and well-thought-out features that I discover along the way…

Congrats on getting the iPhone, you are going to love it. Here is what I would recommend to start with:
Tweetie or Twittelator for twitter
Loopt – especially if others in family use iPhone
Facebook
Urbanspoon
RTM — for GTM and it sync’s with app
Evernote — Must have PERIOD
WeatherBug
Shazan — amazing way to get music
Easy Wi-fi — connect to wifi so easy
i.TV
Mint — financial planning acct management
BibleXpress
There are so many, you can spend hours looking at them all.

Actually, I’m an iPod Touch user until my USCellular contract runs out … then I’m getting an iPhone. Cool thing is they can share the same apps, and with the built-in wifi it’s perfect until I can ditch my Razr. Here are some apps I can’t live without:
- WiFinder: good sniffer!
- Facebook
- Google: Gmail/Gcal/Notebook etc all right there
- RTM
- WootWatch
- AIM
- LinkedIn
- Wordpress: Publish and manage posts
- PhoneFlix: Manage my Netflix queue
- TwitterFon/Twittelator/Twitterific
- The Weather Channel: Usually more accurate than Apple’s weather
- Amazon.com
Happy iPhoning!

Wunder Radio is pretty slick for turning your iPhone into a streaming radio. For fun: Koi Pond, FourFree (Connect4), and Othello.

I would start with Evernote. This is the only new tool I found in 2008 that I am still using and it has an iPhone client. It basically allows you to use the phone like a kind of life recorder/organiser and store your stuff online so it can be reached wherever you are. Updates and new interfaces are promised soon, but it’s pretty good already, and is mostly free.
Good to see you’re coming over to the Jobsian view of the world, but I always struggle to find examples other than Apple for this – is it a phenomenon unique to technology? Given that tech people (geeks?) tend to be passionate people, and there are basically only two computer platforms available (the right one and the wrong one!), maybe that is why Apple is perceived to be cool?
The only strong parallel I can think of right now is a muso talking about his favourite band – there are not many products that can cause that kind of emotional response!
