I would start with Evernote. This is the only new tool I found in 2008 that I am still using and it has an iPhone client. It basically allows you to use the phone like a kind of life recorder/organiser and store your stuff online so it can be reached wherever you are. Updates and new interfaces are promised soon, but it's pretty good already, and is mostly free.

Good to see you're coming over to the Jobsian view of the world, but I always struggle to find examples other than Apple for this - is it a phenomenon unique to technology? Given that tech people (geeks?) tend to be passionate people, and there are basically only two computer platforms available (the right one and the wrong one!), maybe that is why Apple is perceived to be cool?

The only strong parallel I can think of right now is a muso talking about his favourite band - there are not many products that can cause that kind of emotional response!

Wunder Radio is pretty slick for turning your iPhone into a streaming radio. For fun: Koi Pond, FourFree (Connect4), and Othello.

Actually, I'm an iPod Touch user until my USCellular contract runs out ... then I'm getting an iPhone. Cool thing is they can share the same apps, and with the built-in wifi it's perfect until I can ditch my Razr. Here are some apps I can't live without:

- WiFinder: good sniffer!
- Facebook
- Google: Gmail/Gcal/Notebook etc all right there
- RTM
- WootWatch
- AIM
- LinkedIn
- Wordpress: Publish and manage posts
- PhoneFlix: Manage my Netflix queue
- TwitterFon/Twittelator/Twitterific
- The Weather Channel: Usually more accurate than Apple's weather
- Amazon.com

Happy iPhoning!

My prior devices, I used/tolerated. My iPhone, I love. Mainly, because the interface is so sweet. I'm still surprised, months later, at some of the new and well-thought-out features that I discover along the way...
