LinkedIn Is About Helping You Be More Productive

I’m speaking about Social Media to Women in Nuclear later today. In my preparation, I came across this video from the CommonCraft show. In the introduction, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that “LinkedIn isn’t about building connections. It’s about helping you be more productive.”

Watch the video. It makes perfect sense to me.

How about you? What do you think? Are you building your network, simply to have a pile of contacts somewhere, or are you using them to help you be more productive? If so, how? And how are you helping others through sharing your connections?

I’ve always said that LinkedIn is an on-line equivalent of a face-to-face organization like a BNI chapter. The referrals passed by BNI folks to members of their chapter are exactly the sort of thing this vid discusses.

I use LinkedIn to build a contact list of people who I think can help me down the road (haven’t found a need/use yet to utilize them) or if I think I can help them. I don’t accept connections “just to have a big rolodex.”

People who use LinkedIn just to build a list of contacts are missing the point the same way Facebook users try to collect as many friends as possible, or Twitter users who just want to get as many followers as possible. These social networking tools allow a depth of interaction and connectivity not possible with conventional Web sites. Using them just to build lists is a waste of time, while using them to learn, grow and mature personally and professionally provides true value.

The video and the comments so far are both similar to what I would add; it is not about me, it is about helping them, the connections. Yes, I use my connections to help others, imagine that! I also ask for connections to your connections, in the hopes that I can make e-Troductions and connections to help those people. It is not about how many connections I have, it is about how I can help my connections and your connections.
