Before approving my teen of putting up her own Facebook account, I already made sure to secure the proper profile settings for her. It is better to be sure than be sorry in the end.
It's really helpful that you thought of putting these steps up for those non-techy parents out there. It is still a plus that parents should be updated with today's technologies and recent trends of their teens. This will give them the chance to assess if these things can be harmful for their kids and what remedies they can do to prevent their kids from being too exposed to the harms of the online world. Thank you for a wonderful share.

Becky, too often I think parents give their kids the tools and then set them free, with little training. In our house with a 13 year-old, we require constant training and retraining with regards to social media. I think they have short-term memory problems, or as Bill Cosby puts it, "brain damage." :)

Cheryl, thank you for an excellent resource. I passed it on to my sister, to review with her teens.

Chris,

Interestingly I just came across this post from Read Write Web a couple of days ago that includes changing our passwords for the year. You might enjoy it. http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/8_things_every_geek_needs_to_do_before_2010.php

Cheryl, That's good advice for everyone on Facebook. We should all review our privacy settings there periodically.
