The truth is, I’m in dire need.
Life is complex and complicated. How in the world can I breathe (my other word for the year)? I think the answer lies, in part, in this word.
Dictionary.com notes simplify is a verb that can be defined as follows:
- To make less complicated, clearer, or easier
- maths To reduce to a simpler form by cancellation of common factors, regrouping of terms in the same variable, etc.
Yes! Someone please sign me up for clearer and easier. Show me how to reduce to simplest form by canceling common factors and regrouping. Doesn’t that sound like something you could use too?
The alarm goes off at 5:15 and I don’t eat breakfast until nearly 8. The buses begin at 7 and continue at 7:25 and 8:10. Some days I don’t even brush my teeth or shower until…I’m not telling.
Ideas for posts and books and journal entries swirl around in the head, alongside to-do lists, budgets and bills, deadlines and demands of discipleship. My brain lacks the ability to reduce to simpler form. I’m not sure if I know how to cancel common factors and regroup.
Here’s what I do know. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. I know nothing about simplifying life. I know I lack simplicity. In my home, in my calendar, in my thoughts. Probably in my faith and prayer life as well.
On December 29th I wrote in my journal,
“Peter suggested ‘simplify’ [as one of my possible words for 2011] the other day…and I have been thinking of how to simplify. But is that Peter’s word for me? for himself? or is there value in honoring his word in my days?”
And then, this:
“*moments later I was flipping through the pages of the Current sale catalog and saw the “Simplify” organizers. I’ve seen those before, for years, but today they speak to me…Perhaps 2011 is a year to journey into simplicity…”
So this year, I’m on a quest to simplify. Along the way, I’ll be sharing thoughts, tips and probably a few pleas for prayers.
Would you consider sharing your thoughts as well? Each Saturday I’ll write how I’m learning to simplify (or struggling to do so). I’ll include a LinkyTools Basic Linky at the bottom of the post. If you’re a blogger or if you use the Notes section of Facebook, why not write a couple of paragraphs about your own journey to simplify. Or you may choose to document your journey with photos. Once you’re finished, enter the title of your post/Note and include the URL. Feel free to grab the graphic below, created with the help of Hannah, my daughter who edits photos for fun.
(NOTE: If you’re using Facebook Notes, consider changing the share setting to “Everyone” on that specific note, so people who peruse the links can have access to it.)
What about you?
Are you an expert at simplifying life? Or maybe you’re like me, in desperate need? Either way, won’t you say “yes!” and join me in this journey? You can start now by clicking on the link below. And feel free to use the graphic below in your post.
