I Love Garbage Men

You may not know this about me. I confess; I love garbage men (my husband already knows this about me) for two reasons:

First, I’m the youngest in my family. When I was too young for school, but all my siblings were there, I had a housekeeper/babysitter named Lillie Belle. I loved Lillie Belle and she loved me. At times, I’m sure I plucked her last nerve because I was such a chatterbox. It was then that Lillie Belle would send me outside to get out of her hair and out from underneath her feet. I vividly remember several occasions where I would sit on our back porch steps, waiting for the garbage men to come so I would have someone to talk to. Even then, I loved to meet new people. “Never met a stranger,” so they say.

Secondly, my dad had a red 1953 Ford pickup truck - the kind that you could stand on the sideboards. I remember playing for hours standing on the side of the parked truck, pretending I was a garbage man - er - girl. They were so lucky - getting to ride on the outside of the truck!

If you share my affinity for the profession, you’ll understand how cool it was for me to see this video and watch two garbage men riding down the street. Brought back fond memories.

When you were a child, what professions did you think were cool? Did you ever try your hand at it and if so, how did it turn out? What jobs do you think are cool now?
